Story-Line presents a conversation between artist and filmmaker Mischa Leinkauf (Berlin) and film critic and philosopher Dana Linssen (Amsterdam). Slam poets from the Euregion, Merlijn Huntjens and Jessy James LaFleur, will join in as well, with their views on Europe.
Mischa Leinkauf is part of the Berlin artist duo Wermke/Leinkauf. Their latest installation, Macht der Masse/4.Halbzeit, recently on show in Ludwig Forum Aachen, investigates the phenomenon of violent football fans or “ultras” in the context of political revolts. On two colossal video walls, the artists show rousing “ultras” and their increasing influence in public space. The installation creates a strong physical and emotional experience that shakes the visitor.
Macht der Masse/4.Halbzeit will be the starting point for the conversation between Mischa Leinkauf and Dana Linssen about Europe and the role of art and activism in public spaces. They will show filmclips and discuss the artistic means with which stories are told. They will also interact with the audience. Two poetry slammers from the Euregion scrutinize Europe in their own way.
Micha Leinkauf
Mischa Leinkauf has been creating interventions in public space since the beginning of the millennium. He explores and climbs restricted places, such as bridges, towers and borders, and documents this in a unique way: a homage to the freedom and beauty of public space.
The artist duo Wermke/Leinkauf gained international recognition in 2014 when they swapped the American flags on the Brooklyn Bridge for white American ones. Was it a joke or a serious breach of security? New York was confused, the New York City Police felt embarrassed. In their documentary Symbolic Threats, they showed how the media and the public responded to this “terrorist threat” in New York City.
Dana Linssen
Dana Linssen (Amsterdam) is a philosopher, film critic of NRC Handelsblad, film curator and teacher at ArtEZ School of Acting. She received the Louis Hartlooper Prize for film journalism and the Silver Rosebud because of her great value for the Dutch film world.
This event is organized in collaboration with EuregioKultur and Apollo Kino on 10 August. In collaboration with Interdisciplinary Arts (iArts Maastricht), EuregioKultur, and Schunck this event will be a ‘Schunck Talk Extra’ on 17 September.
This event is made possible by the Province of Limburg (NL) and Literarischer Sommer (DE).
