REPORT:
Storytellers on Stage

By Petra Quaedvlieg – On 12 November 2015 Story-Line Maastricht, Lumière Cinema Maastricht and the Student & Society Initiative presented: Storytellers on Stage, a new bilingual event in which storytellers from different countries and disciplines are brought together. Writers, filmmakers, journalists and poets joined us in a discussion about literature, film, media and current events.

During the first edition of this new initiative, two parallel sessions were organized. The English session focused on stories from and about the Middle East. The Dutch session was devoted to the stories of refugees and migrants.

The program:

We welcomed three special storytellers from the Middle East, with Arabist Petra Stienen as the moderator of the session. Journalist Dirk Wanrooij talked about his experience as a foreign correspondent in Cairo and read from his book RIOT: CHRONICLE OF THE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION. The third guest was Malu Halasa, author of SYRIA SPEAKS: ART AND CULTURE ON THE FRONTLINE.

Two storytellers with a mutual interest in stories of migrants joined us for an interview with Dana Linssen, editor-in-chief of De Filmkrant and film critic for NRC Handelsblad.
